William Hogg Baker was the son of Sarah Jane Hogg and Franklin Baker.
William Hogg Baker, Sr. was president of Merritt-Chapman-Scott Corporation, 17 Battery Place, New York, New York., one of the largest salvage and marine construction firms in the world.
Before moving to Montclair in 1927, Mr. Baker was a resident of Saugerties, New York.
William prepared for his profession at Cornell University for which he graduated in 1901. For some years before he joined the organization for which he became president, he was associated with the Atlas Cement Company and later the North America Cement Company. At his death he was director of North America Cement and United Dry Docks, Inc.
He was president of Merritt-Chapman-Scott, Ltd. of Montreal and Merritt-Chapman-Lindsay, Ltd. and vice-president of the Quebec Salvage and Wrecking Company, Ltd. of Montreal.
Mr. Baker was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church, Theta Delta Chi Fraternity, Cornell University Club, Engineers' Club of New York, Montclair Golf Club, Knoll Club, Boca Raton Club of Florida, and Sea View Golf Club of Atlanta City, New Jersey.
William married Catherine Elizabeth Brady on June 4, 1906 in Denver, Colorado.
To this union four children were born, William Hogg Baker, Jr. (1907-1951), Sarah Jane Baker Volkmann (1909-1943), Charles Edward Baker (1914-1946), and Edith Louise Baker Campaigne (1917-1986).
