Betty Arizzi
October 26, 1929 – February 27, 2022

Betty Jane Arizzi, known to friends as Jane, and to family as Mom, Grandma, Little grandma, and Aunt Janie, peacefully passed away on February 27, 2022.

She is survived by her children, Robert Arizzi (Denise) and Andrea Bell (Bill); grandchildren: Amanda Virginia, Erin Arizzi-Shores, Sara Wherrity, Sarah Bell Goldsmith, and Joseph Arizzi; great-Grandchildren: Lily, Suzanna, Noa, Dylan, and Patrick. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph Arizzi, her sisters Lily Berman and Betty Adelson, her mother, Sarah Brokopp, and sister-in-law Carmela Sabia.

Jane was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. To anyone who asked, she always insisted she was born a country girl. According to family lore, she had a wild streak as a young girl. She used to sneak out of her bedroom window to go dancing at "the Red Barn" until her mother came and dragged her home in the wee hours of the morning. While living with her sister Lily in the city, Jane met her future husband, an Italian from the Bronx. After marrying Joe, she moved from what was then rural Connecticut to the city. She lived in the Bronx, and later Queens, for the rest of her life, and knew the city up and down.

Jane was devoted to family and friends. In addition to her own children, she had an especially close relationship with her sister's children Arlene and Mark. For many years Jane, Lily, and their families summered together at a bungalow colony in Monticello near the Catskills of upstate NY. She truly loved that place.

Her favorite role was always wife and mother, but Jane also had a long career, working for many years at the Actors Guild in Manhattan, where she learned bookkeeping. After moving to Queens, she worked at a landscaping company until she retired. She and her late husband often visited Long Island where her son and his family lived, and Texas, where her daughter had settled with her family. When her husband fell ill, Jane became his full-time caregiver. She was entirely dedicated to him, and did everything she could to make his remaining time comfortable and full of time with family.

Jane was a fastidious dresser, who never left the house looking anything less than perfect. She loved shopping, mahjong, going to the racetrack, visiting any casino, and especially playing cards with friends. Her preferred game was always poker (any kind) and she liked to put a little money on the table. She always played to win.

Jane loved to take care of people, especially by feeding them. She was a wonderful cook, a skill she learned from her mother-in-law Frances. Guests to her home in Queens never left without a hot meal, and treats from one of the many candy jars that adorned her living room. Among family she was known for her famous red sauce, lasagna, and especially her baked ziti. Leftovers never lasted long. She will always be remembered for the holiday parties she hosted at her home in College Point.

Over the last ten years Jane enjoyed spending time in Florida with her sister-in-law Carmella, seeing her grandchildren get married, and meeting new great-grandbabies. Even in her nineties, she was at her happiest when taking care of others.

She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by friends and family all over the country.
