Murder Victim. She was murdered by socialite Chester Gillette, who was subsequently tried and executed for the crime. Her case was the basis of Theodore Dreiser's popular novel titled "An American Tragedy" (1925), which was later adapted into the Academy Award-winning movie "A Place in the Sun" (1951).
