Choreographer. Igor Moiseyev was regarded as one of the greatest 20th-century folk dance choreographers. He began his career as a dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, graduating in 1924. In the mid-30s, Moiseyev established the Theatre of Folk Art. He then raveled researching local dances that would become the repertory for his own folk dance ensemble. He created about 300 dances, including "Footballer" in 1930, "Spartacus" in 1932, and "Three Fat Men" in 1935. Moiseyev was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1953. He also received the Lenin Prize in 1967 for the dance show "A Road to the Dance." On the day of his centenary, Moiseyev became the first Russian to receive the Order for the Merits before the Fatherland, first class, which is the highest civilian decoration of the Russian Federation. He received many awards during his career with most from Eastern European countries. He re-created for theatrical presentation numerous national dances of the Soviet Union. Born the only child of a Russian lawyer and a French-Romanian mother, the family relocated to France until he was eight years old. During this time, he mastered the French language. Politically, he never joined the Communist Party. With nearly 300 original works, the repertoire of the Igor Moiseyev Ballet continues performing into the 21st century. Sources state he was married at least three times: He first married award-winning ballerina, Nina Borisovna Podgoretskaya, who continued to work together with him until the 1960s. In 1940, he married the dancer Tamara Zeifertand, and the couple had a daughter, Olga Moiseyeva, who became a ballerina of the Kirov Ballet. Later, he married award-winning Russian choreographer Irina Moiseyeva, who became his widow.
