She was the daughter of Guy Wogan Philipps, 2nd Baron Milford, the only member of the Communist Party in the British House of Lords, and his first wife Rosamond Lehmann, a well-known author. She had an older brother named Hugo.
She married poet Patrick Joseph Gregory Kavanagh on February 28, 1956. He is buried with her.
She died in 1958 of polio while visiting Bali in Indonesia. Some sources states Java as death place.
