Kirby was born in Jasper, Alberta and graduated from Mount Royal University in Calgary, with a degree in theatre. Both of his paternal grandparents were born in Northern Ireland.

Kirby did a lot of voice acting in Vancouver, BC. He was known for voicing Miroku in Inuyasha; Van Fanel fron Escaflowne; Cyclops from X-Men: Evolution; Jay from Class of the Titans; Teru Mikami from Death Note; Trowa Barton from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing; Hot Shot from Transformers: Cybertron; and Cole from LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.
