"Philip V. Chiumiento, 94, passed away early on December 28, 2017, after several months of declining health.
Born in Woburn, a first generation Italian American, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Mary Chiumiento. He lived his entire life on Conn Street in the South End of Woburn. He entered the US Army during World War II and served as an interpreter stateside, until being honorably discharged.
After the war, Phil began his business as a carpenter and continued working until just a few weeks ago. Specializing in kitchens, some of the ones he created were featured in magazines and newspapers in the Boston area.
His mother owned and operated Mary and Bernie's Restaurant in the South end where, as a young man, Phil also worked. Many years later, he would reopen the restaurant by the name Mary's Clam House and ran it until the early ?80s.
Phil met his wife, Stella Mercadante, in Lexington during a cookout after a baseball game; married in 1950, they shared 52 years of marriage until her death in 2002. Together they had four children, Philip, Peter, Patricia and the late Paul.
During his life, Phil enjoyed vacationing with his family down the Cape in the buggy on Race Point Beach, Sundays at The Farm and many trips to Florida, Italy and The Camp in Maine. Phil was a fixture at the South End Italian Club for many years and continued to oversee many operations there until the time of his death. An avid gardener, his abundance of crops were enjoyed by all, including his grapevines and home-made wine. Phil always looked for the good in people; he was the hardest worker and tirelessly provided for his family and extended family throughout his life. He will be sadly missed.
Phil was predeceased by his parents, his wife Stella, his brother Anthony, sister Antoinette Pandolph, and son, Paul.
He is lovingly survived by his sons, Philip, and his wife Patty, and Peter; his daughter, Patricia, and her husband Bobby Wall; grandchildren, Philip Bassett, his wife Desirée, Paul, Michael, Rachel, Joseph, his wife Melissa, Danny, Peter and Taylor Chiumiento, Brandon Wall; great-grandchildren, Justice, Nedra, Philip (Boo-Boo) and Sebastian Bassett and Matthew Chiumiento, along with many nieces, nephews and friends."
