In September 1918, James' WWI draft registration shows he is a mill hand at the Consolidated Pacific Cement Plaster Company in Amboy, San Bernardino County.
In the 1930 US census James is listed as the proprietor of a hotel & gas station in Amboy (actually Chambless Junction). James and wife Fannie ran that store until 1944 when they sold to William & Willa Ridder. They then moved to Barstow.
James & Fannie apparently married in about 1926. In that 1930 US census, Fannie shows age 49 born in Arkansas and age at first marriage as 45. The census shows two offspring belonging to James, Melvin aged 24 and Pearl aged 23. The children both show their mother born in Oklahoma. James' mother, Sarah Ellen Chambless is living with them and is aged 82, born in Ohio and a widow.
