Sacred / to the memory of / Sir Henry Ernest Gascoyne BULWER G C M G / youngest son of / William Earle Lytton BULWER Esq of Heydon / and Emily daughter of / General Gascoyne MP for Liverpool / born Heydon 11th Dec 1836 and died there / 30 Sept 1914 / entering the Diplomatic Service he acted as / private secty to his uncle Lard Dalling & Bulwer / Ambassador at Constantinople and afterwards / held various official appointments in the / Ionian Islands & East & West Indies / He was Lieut Govr of Natal from 1875 to 1880 / and again from 1882 to 1895 when he was also / Special Commissioner for Zulu affairs / From 1886 to 1892 he was High Commissioner / in Cyprus / devoting his life to the service of his sovereign / and the Empire he was in diverse circumstances / and critical times distinguished as an able / administrator and a wise counsellor throughout / a long career / Erected by his nephews and nieces
