Elsie Irene Hart, 86, of Farmington, N.H., died Dec. 5, 2010, at Franklin Regional Hospital with her daughter by her side.

She was born Elsie Irene Cardinal in Farmington, N.H., on May 28, 1924, the daughter of Helen Ruth Burrows and John Cardinal, Jr.

Elsie attended Farmington High School and was the first in her family to graduate from high school. Education was always important to her, expecting that both her children would graduate from college. Throughout her life she worked in the restaurant business, including family owned Wagon Wheel and Cardinal's Seafarer Restaurant. Elsie also owned and operated the Big Boy Diary Bar on Route 11 in Farmington.

In later years she worked at the New England Center in Durham. Elsie was active in the Farmington community as a member of the First Congregational Church, Historical Society, and Women's Club. She served on the Farmington School Board, and was instrumental in helping to start the hot lunch program in the schools. Elsie was also adventurous and traveled to many places, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Hawaii, Spain, Italy, and France.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally I. Riley and her husband, Robert, of Milton; two grandchildren, Jennifer I. Riley of Cranston, R.I., and Jamie J. Riley and wife, Anne, of Milton; great-grandchildren, Elise, Claire, and baby, William; two nephews, Rene and Wayne Cardinal of Rochester.

Elsie was predeceased by her son, Jerone Robert Hart of New Haven, Conn., and a brother, Leon Cardinal of Rochester.

There are no calling hours, family and friends are welcome to a funeral service on Friday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church on Main Street in Farmington, with the Rev. Debra Pratt-Peckham, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington.
