She daughter of John and Eliza Riley. At the age of 24 on June 22, 1888, she married the widower Alfred Tennyson Dickens , the son of the well-known English Author Charles Dickens. She was his second wife and the step-mother to his two daughters. Inquiries revealed that Emily, over several years, had sold off certain property, which was owned by her mother. The discovery was made by her sister Catherine after their mother had died. Emily said her actions were done at her husband's request. At this point, her husband left the country, abandoning her and leaving her penniless. Being heartbroken and depressed, she began working as a domestic servant for income for some years. She died in a hospital on the February 23, 1913 of Pneumonic ulcerative or "endocarditis." She and Dickens had no children. Although documents state she was buried in Melbourne Cemetery there seems no record of her being actually buried in the family's plot.

According to obituary , she was admitted to the hospital on February 6th suffering from pneumonia, which is given as the cause of death. She died on the 24th.
