As written by Jan Sloan Hilliard - Bill was my father.
Born on the family farm on the King/Vaughan Line - Lot 34 Con 8 Vaughan Township, ON Canada. His parents were William Sloan and Annie Lorraine East. He attended the Purpleville School located on the Teston Road south of Kipling Avenue and Woodbridge High School. He went to the Pine Grove Church in Pine Grove, ON.
Dad left the farm at the age of 19 to attend Weston Technical Institute where he learned the trade of oil burner repair. He took a job with Imperial Oil in Toronto.
He met my mother Lois Jean Bender at the People's Church while attending a Youth Fellowship function. They were married on 30 June 1950 in Toronto, ON.
Bill & Lois had 3 children. Patricia Lois born 1950, Janice Anne born 1952 and Ronald William born 1954. All 3 children were born in Toronto, ON. Canada.
Dad & Mom bought a home in Rexdale, ON in 1956. Dad started his own oil burner repair company - Sloan's Heating during the same year. In 1966 the family moved to RR. 1 Schomberg, ON where Dad became co-owner of a trenching/backhoe business.
Bill and Lois divorced in 1972. Dad married Marion Douglas in January 1972. They had one daughter Michelle Lorraine Sloan in 1973. They were milk farming in Chatsworth, ON. at the time of her birth. They farmed milk cattle until Dad was run over by a tractor in 1974 and after his long recovery, raised beef cattle & pigs. Not long after, they bought a farm in Kenilworth, ON (near Arthur). They had a milk quota with Gay Lea Farms. Dad & Marion separated in 1974. Dad sold the farm and moved to the Tottenham area where he operated the Black Stallion Service Station on Hwy 9. While working there he met Gwen McNeil. In 1978 they bought a 100 acre farm in Chisholm, ON. 12 miles east of Powassan on what is now Memorial Park Drive east of Golf Course Road. He did his best to farm, but the land was poor and his old injuries hampered his health. He suffered from severe arthritis as well. He took local jobs trucking and worked at a feed mill, but he missed the farming.
In 1990 Dad was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer & later on Leukemia. The first year or so wasn't too bad, but toward the end, he suffered miserably. He died in the North Bay Hospital on 3 May 1996.
Some of the things Dad loved the most were:
The good old camping & boating days with family & friends. He was never happier than dragging a bunch of kids around the lake behind an old cedar strip boat teaching us to water ski. He loved farming - every aspect of it especially his animals.
