At birth, he was William John Walter Seth Stolzenburg. His middle names, John, Walter, and Seth were the given names of his mother's brothers. He frequently used just the initials of his middle names; so his name would appears as William J W S Stolzenburg, or, after his name change, William J W S Hall. He preferred to be called Bill.

He married Helen Annie Hall 17 Jun 1911 in Vancouver, British Columbia. They had met in London, where they were both apprentices in the same print shop, he as a pressman, she as a bookbinder. After the beginning of World War I, while in Canada, he changed his family name to that of his wife's, Hall.

The couple immigrated to the USA in 1922. They lived for a while with his sister's family, Herman and Dora Stolzenburg, in Seattle. By 1930, they had moved to Los Angeles, where Bill owned and operated a printing business.
