Theresa Anne Torres Mata (Terri), age 64, has left to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There will be a memorial service at a later date. As per her wishes she will be cremated, some of her ashes will be scattered at Glencoe, New Mexico and At Cherry Beach, in Long Beach, Ca., where her baby daughter’s ashes were scattered 43 years ago.
She fought a courageous, yearlong battle. She used this last year to strengthen her relationship with our dear Lord Jesus Christ. She learned to be patient, loving and forgiving. At the end she became a strong solider of God.
Theresa was born in Roswell, New Mexico, at Saint Mary’s Hospital, on February 3, 1953. She attended Pueblo Jr. High and Roswell High School in the late ’60s.
Theresa was a person of many talents, and very creative. Sewing, oil painting, refurbishing furniture, making doll house furniture for her doll house that she also built. She would always be doing or making something.
Her favorite thing was working on the Mata-Torres family genealogy. She began researching over 45 years ago. With over 4,000 entries. She enjoyed going to Glencoe, New Mexico, and visiting old grave sites throughout New Mexico along with her brother Johnny. She would document every entry in her research. When she talked about the new information that she found, her face would light up. She had an incredible memory, if asked about a certain person, she could give you names, birthdates, date of death right off the top of her head. Her dream was to write a book and have it published. That dream will someday become a reality, her two sons, promised to finish the book and to publish it. Theresa was contacted by National Geographic to identify a few people in a tintype photo of Billy the Kid. Theresa had gained fame with other genealogists and researchers of Lincoln County.
She also ran three Facebook groups, which made her very popular, in the genealogy and historians world.
Theresa was a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother to her two sons and her grandchildren.
Surviving her are her sons Pedro Gonzalez (Deanna) of Albuquerque, grandchildren, John, Pete, and Noah Gonzalez of Roswell. Annaleah, Alyssa, and Andrew of Albuquerque.
Jose Angel Gonzalez (Martha), grandchildren Benicio Ian Gonzalez, Angel, Fernando and Eduardo Alvarado all of Las Vegas.
