Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Jacob D. Warkentin, was born May 13, 1904, at Blumenort, Manitoba, to John G. and Lena Dueck Warkentin. He unexpectedly departed this life on Monday, August 23, 1982, at the Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, Manitoba, reaching the age of 78 years, 3 months, and 10 days.
Father lived in the Greenland, Manitoba, district all his life. The passing of his mother when he was four years old left a lasting impression. He often expressed his appreciation for his second mother, who came into the home some four years later. He grew up to be a farmer, in which he provided for the family until his retirement. Especially in his last years, his keen interest in flowers, plants, and woodwork was a source of satisfaction to him.
At the age of fifteen he answered God's call and upon true repentance was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. To these vows be remained faithful unto the end.
March 21, 1926, he was married to Catherina Wiebe, sharing life's joys and sorrows for over fifty-six years. To this union were born twelve children. Our mother's failing health, after twenty-five years of marriage, left Dad with a heavy burden. The load fell increasingly upon his shoulders as her disease progressed, finally leaving her an invalid. His last nine years were lonely ones, with Mother being in a care home. His concern for her and almost daily visits filled his life. Though the load was heavy, God was a very present help to him. His enduring courage was appreciated by the family and others. His faith and prayers carried him through. His last concern was leaving Mother.
Our father enjoyed reasonably good health until the last few days. He was anticipating a family gathering for Monday; however, due to severe chest pains, he had to be admitted to the hospital Sunday afternoon. He expressed himself, that he thought his end was near and that he was ready to go. He especially desired that his family would do all to meet him in Heaven. The experiences that deepened his Christian life in recent years were very dear to Dad. He often expressed his appreciation for the Church. As the family, we feel confident that our father has fought a good fight and has finished his course and that a crown of righteousness is laid up for him in the realms of glory.
Besides his beloved wife Tina, Father leaves to cherish his memory: four daughters: Irene and husband Edwin Penner, Swan River; Doris, and husband Albert Penner, Morris; June and husband Denton Barkman, Killarney; Irma and husband Lewis Giesbrecht, Ste. Anne; seven sons: Eldon and wife Geraldine, Saltcoats, Saskatchewan; Irvy, Ste. Anne; Louis and wife Edith, Bredenbury, Saskatchewan; Clifford and wife Naomi, Rio Verde, Goias, Brazil; Milton and wife Margaret, Cartwright; Dewayne and wife Adeline, Ste. Anne; Marlin and wife Katherine, Ste. Anne; sixty-two grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; six brothers: Ben Warkentin, Ste. Anne; Irvin Warkentin, Ste. Anne; Art Warkentin, Steinbach; Ed Warkentin, Hyas, Saskatchewan; John Dueck, Ste. Anne; Dave Dueck, Ste. Anne; two sisters: Mrs. Lena (Abe) Friesen, Fullerton, Ontario; and Mrs. Margaret Toews, St. Mary's, Ontario.
Father was predeceased by one daughter, Rosella; one son-in-law, John Reimer; three brothers: John D. Warkentin; Henry Dueck; Cornelius Dueck; three sisters: Anna, Mrs. Jacob M. Penner; Mary, Mrs. Abe C. Toews; Tina, Mrs. Dave Goossen; and one grandson and two great-granddaughters in infancy.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 27, 1982, at the Greenland Church, with the home ministers in charge. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
