Pastor of St. John the Baptist Gildehaus Catholic Parish in Villa Ridge,Mo. Died suddenly Oct. 26,2016.
Father Bannes, 52, was ordained for the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 2007 by Cardinal Rayond L. Burke at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.
His first assignment was as associate pastor of Holy Infant Parish in Ballwin. Father Bannes was appointed administrator of St. John the Baptist Parish in Gildehaus in 2013 and pastor of Franklin County the parish the next year.
Born in St. Louis, he attended St. Matthias the Apostle School in South County and Christian Brothers College High School, then in Clayton. Father Bannes earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Missouri-Rolla and did bookkeeping for Bannes Consulting Inc., his family's construction company. During that time he discerned a vocation to the priesthood and entered Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in 2001.
As a seminarian, he served his acolyte internship at Holy Infant Parish in Ballwin and later served at St. Angela Merici Parish in Florissant. His transitional deacon assignment was at St. Joseph Parish in Cottleville.
In telling what led him to the priesthood, he said he had what he called a "reconversion" of his faith as a young adult. He began going to daily Mass and became active in his parish, joining prayer groups, studying Scripture.
"Finally after about three or four months my family and friends saw the dramatic changes in my life," Father Bannes said. "One of my friends said, 'Have you ever thought of the priesthood?' I had not. But the seed was planted. I was 28 then. I thought, 'I'm too old, not worthy.' But there was a sense of great peace about it. It was nine years before I entered the seminary."
Beloved son of Lorenz "Lorry" T. Bannes (wife, Debbie) and Janet Bruening Bannes (deceased). Loving brother of Stephen Bannes (Mary Lee) and Michael Bannes (Kathy). Adoring uncle of Marc Bannes (fiancé Meg McGrath), Maddie Bannes (special friend Jerel Bobbitt), Matt Bannes, Honora (Nora) Bannes and Hope Bannes.
