Moved with his family at age 14 to South Dakota. Assisted his father in running a hardware store there and also learned the printer's trade.

At age 21, moved to Adams County, settling in Coatsburg. He purchased and ran the Adams County Review for a few years.

Married Minnie Thompson in Coatsburg October 6, 1897.

Worked as a traveling salesman for a number of firms, lastly for the Tenk Hardware company.
