Interrogated by Soviet NKVD 4 times between 1944-1946. Forced to leave (Lviv) Ukraine on April 26, 1946 by Soviet authorities. Placed as Apostolic Administrator of Krakow after Cardinal Sapieha's death in 1951. He was not placed as Metropolitan Archbishop at this time since, under a 1950 agreement with the Cardinal, approval was required by the Polish (Communist) government and was not forthcoming.

Placed under house arrest and later jailed by Soviet authorities in December, 1952 on charges of espionage in harassment for refusal to condemn priests of his diocese who were charged with espionage.

Funeral led by Bishop Karol Wojtyla, his successor, providing the homily along with Fr. Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski.

He was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta (Order of Rebirth of Poland) one of Poland's highest honors.
