Jacob McDaniel Wolfe married his first wife, Lydia Elizabeth Johnson, in Wise County, Virginia, in 1868. They appeared on the federal census with their infant daughter Celia in 1870, but 10 years later, when the 1880 census was taken, Daniel Wolfe was living in Floyd, Scott County, Virginia, with his second wife, Mahala Hackney Mahala Hackney Wolfe. They had four children in their household: Cosly 10, Mary 7, Laura 5, and Albert 1. ("Cosly" was probably a nickname for Celia or possibly a terrible spelling error. Laura doesn't appear again in any records and may have died young.)

Twenty years later when the 1900 census was taken, Daniel and Mahala Wolfe were still living in Floyd, but the only child in the house was 9-year-old Verlina, who had been born in December of 1890.

Daniel Wolfe died in 1908. There is no record of Mahala's death, but she likely also died before the 1910 census. When the 1910 census was taken, Daniel Wolfe's first wife, Lydia Elizabeth, had reappeared. She was living next door to her son Albert in Floyd, Virginia, after she had been missing from the census records for decades. On the census, she reported that she had been married eight years and had four children. She died in 1913.

Death certificates for Celia, Albert, and Verlina report that their mother's maiden name was Hackney. A 1942 marriage record for Mary reports her mother's maiden name was Hackney. This suggests that Mahala Hackney, who may have been a common law wife, raised these children. Mahala would have been 42 when Verlina was born in 1890. Was she Verlina's biological mother? Verlina's sisters Mary and Laura would have been 17 and 15 in 1890, so they are possible mothers too.
