George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus was the son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas and Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus. He married Lady Mary Stuart, the daughter of Robert III King of Scotland and Annabella Drummond. A contract of marriage was signed for the couple on May 24, 1397.
