The following obituary was written by John's family and was provided to the Green Hills Mortuary for his memorial service.

John G. Fleitz, the son of Joseph and Irene Fleitz, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2011 at the age of 82. He was born April 20, 1929 in San Pedro, California and had been a longtime resident of Long Beach. John is survived by his beloved family, wife; Beverly Fleitz, children; Kimberly Duarte-Fleitz, Julie (Kris) Kazarian, Lisa Wetherell, Jamie Phillips and grandchildren; Kristen (Leith), Jeff (Anastassia), Brittany, Jon, Katie, Jackson, Daniel, Courtney, Irene and Mitchell.

John was one of Hannah Catherine MEARA FLEITZ's grandchildren, through her son, Joseph Edward FLEITZ who was John's father. John became a national champion tennis player and noted businessman in southern California. He was the National Junior College tennis champion in 1948, and he played varsity tennis at the University of Southern California on a full scholarship helping USC win the NCAA national championship in tennis in 1950.

While playing junior tennis, John met a nationally-ranked junior tennis player from Santa Monica, CA. Her name was Beverly BAKER. She became nationally ranked in singles and doubles and was a finalist at Wimbledon in 1955, losing the singles final to Louise Brough Clapp 7–5, 8–6. To reach the finals, Beverly had won an exciting semi-final match, defeated the No. 1 seed, Doris Hart.

One of Beverly's special memories from an earlier Wimbledon tournament was meeting Princess Elizabeth who later became Queen Elizabeth II upon the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952.

Beverly ranked in the world top ten in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1958, and 1959, reaching a career high of World No. 3 in those rankings in 1954, 1955, and 1958. She won her only Grand Slam title when she teamed with Darlene Hard to win the women's doubles title at the 1955 French Championships in Paris.

The following obituary was written by John's family and was published in the Argonaut Online in its 01 Dec 2011 edition.

John G. Fleitz, the longtime owner of two marinas in Marina del Rey, passed away peacefully Nov. 14 at his home in Long Beach. He was 82. Fleitz was born April 20, 1929 in San Pedro and had been a longtime resident of Long Beach.

Self-described as a “good” tennis player, he was the 1948 national junior college champion and earned a scholarship to USC. Fleitz played the Pacific Northwest and Eastern circuits in 1950 and became the 45 Indoor Doubles Champion in 1974.

Beginning in 1954, Fleitz began developing and operating marinas in the Los Angeles harbor area. Over the years he expanded his marina business into San Pedro and Marina del Rey.

Additionally, he was a successful developer of tennis recreation facilities including Palm Desert Tennis Club in Palm Desert and Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Fleitz was a cherished husband, father, grandpa, and friend whose presence will be missed each and every day.

First and foremost, he was a family man who cherished his family above all else, including his Holiday Harbor family. Fleitz was truly a man of integrity whose actions personified his values, friends said. His dry sense of humor was legendary, as he was, especially in the fields of marina recreation and fitness center development, they added.

Fleitz is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Beverly Fleitz; children, Kimberly Duarte-Fleitz, Julie Kazarian, Lisa Wetherell and Jamie Phillips; and grandchildren, Kristen, Jeff, Brittany, Jon, Katie, Jackson, Daniel, Courtney, Irene and Mitchell.

A celebration of his life was held at Holiday Harbor in San Pedro Nov. 21.

A memorial fund in Fleitz’s name benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association has been set up at http://act.alz.org/goto/Johnfleitz.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association fund or the Hospice Foundation of America at www.hospicefoundation.org.

Beverly and John had six children, five girls and a son who died as an infant. They were thus some of Hannah Catherine MEARA FLEITZ's great grandchildren.
