Laura M. Gilbert, 56, of Ledge Drive Barre Town, died Monday Morning, June 4, 2007, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. Born Jan. 15, 1951, in Montpelier, she was the daughter of Dean F. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Ballou) Gilbert. She attended elementary school in Northfield, junior high school in Barre Town and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1969. In 1973, she graduated from Lyndon State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and was a dean’s list student. She had been a special education teacher at Lake Region Union High School in Orleans for a year. In 1974 she joined the Agency of Transportation for the state of Vermont as a data entry clerk. She was a supervisor of automated services at the agency. Golfing, casinos, stamp collecting, outdoor activities and arts and crafts were her special interests. Her two nieces and her grandniece were a special joy to her. She belonged to the Vermont State Employees Association and the Montpelier Women’s Golf Association. Survivors include her mother, “Betty” Gilbert Grenier of North Barre Manor; her companion, Claude Young, at home; her brother, Michael Gilbert and his wife Nancy of Trow Hill, Barre Town; two nieces, Betsy Memmolo and her husband Mark and their daughter Rose Elizabeth, all of Andover, Mass., and Karen Gilbert and her fiancée Christopher Donegan of Charlestown, Mass.; an uncle, Glen Gilbert; and cousins and manhy special friends. She was predeceased by her father, Dean. Her funeral will be held Satruday, June 9, 2007, at 11 a.m. in the Barre Congregational Church. Burial will follow in the Hope Cemetery in Barre.
