The community was shocked on Sunday to learn that Stephen Chapman had died on that day at the home of his father-in-law, H. D. Spencer, on North Washington street. About a week previous his little daughter died of diphtheria. During her illness he was constatnly at her side, and as a result contracted the same disease, which quickly did its fatal work in his case. The doublly bereaved wife and baby boy have the heartflet sympathy of the whole city.

The deceased was the son of B. F. Chapman of Oneida, and was born in Clockville, Madison county, 38 years ago. After receiving a collegiate education, he entered his father's law office, studied law and was admitted to the bar, and subsequently entered into partnership with his father at Oneida. Upon the failure of the latter's health and consequent abandonment of active practice, the son devoted his attention to the management of his father's business interests. About eight years ago the deceased married Miss Kittie Spencer of this city and up to about two years ago they resided in Oneida, when they came to Rome and had since resided here. Besides the wife and child, he leaves his father and mother, one sister, Mrs. Charles F. Remick of Oneida. The funeral which was private occurred Monday.
