He later worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for 25 years. When he retired in 1974 he moved to Phoenix, Arizona. He later lived in Maine where he taught at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. He was married three times. He had three children with his second wife. He was married to his third wife for 32 years. She died in 2003. He died of complications from Leukemia.
