Roger O. Smith, 77, of Moline, IL, passed away Friday, August 2, 2013, at Clarissa Cook Hospice in Bettendorf, IA.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 4th, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Monday, August 5th, at 11:00 a.m., at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1107 Tanglefoot Lane, Bettendorf, IA 52722. Military Rites will be accorded by Moline American Legion Post #246. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, or to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bettendorf, IA.

Roger Orbin Smith was born in Moline on August 14, 1935, to Glenn and Florence (Engstrom) Smith. He was a Quad City resident all of his life.

He attended John Deere Junior High, and graduated from Moline Senior High School, which was located on 16th Street, in 1953. While in high school, he was very active with the tennis team, lettering a couple a times. He was very active with the Pilgrim Fellowship Youth Group at the First Congregational Church, and he also participated in the first few Quad City Music Guild productions. Roger graduated from Augustana College in 1957, with a degree in business management. He was an active Roundel Fraternity man. From college he was called into service with the U.S. Navy. He was a 2nd Class Petty Officer on the U.S.S. North Hampton, which was the flag ship of the 2nd Fleet.

When he returned from his tour of duty, he married his college sweetheart, Norma Nordberg, and they settled down in Moline. He went to work with his father at Smith Filter Corporation, which was on 2nd Avenue, Moline. His father had started the filter business in 1939, and was ready to let Roger take over. Roger became President of Smith Filter in 1965. In 1994, Smith Filter moved their plant to 5000 - 41st Street Court, Moline, into a brand new building. The business now employs over 50 people. Roger's daughters, Jana Lecander and Sharilyn Solis are executives of the company, too.

Roger became a pilot in 1964, and held a commercial rating. He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen of the QC's, and was in charge of the Aerorama '72, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Quad City Airport. He also belonged to the AOPA, and was President of the QC Airmens Association.

He was an active member of the Moline Kiwanis Club, helping with all the pancake days, the selling of peanuts, and the putting up of lights along the river at Christmas time. He was President in 1973- 1974. He was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bettendorf, and was on the church council, involved in expansion of the building programs and organ selection. He was a member of the Moline Elks Club, and the Davenport Gyros. He assisted with several of the MHS Class of 1953 reunions, and he regularly attended a men's coffee group called "the knights of the stale donuts." He enjoyed boating, bicycling, gardening, flying, his Corvette Convertible, traveling, and, in the winter, Naples, FL.

He was a very good father of two daughters, grandfather of three girls and a boy, great-grandfather of a boy, and husband to his wife of 53 years.

In addition to his wife, Norma, survivors include, daughters: Jana Lecander of Sherrard, IL, and Sharilyn (Jim) Solis of Bettendorf; grandchildren: Nichole and Megan Lecander, Christine (Rob) Zimmerman, and Matthew Solis; great-grandson: Bobby Zimmerman; and a great-granddaughter due in November.
