Marianna "Mary Ann" Teresa Catanzarite, the oldest of nine children born to Ferdinando "Fred" Catanzarite (1892-1963) and Maria Rosa Gallo (1896-1973) was born on Nov 10, 1916 in Hillsville, Lawrence County, PA. Her parents came to America in 1912 and 1915 from Reggio Calabria, Italy. Italian was her first language. Her eight siblings are Joseph (1918), Dominic (1920), Julius (1921), Samuel (1923), Catherine "Cutty" (1925), Antoinette (1928), Fred (1935) and Rose (1937). In 1919 her father moved the family to Lorain, Lorain County, Ohio, an industrial city on Lake Erie thirty miles west of Cleveland. Her parents and all of her siblings settled permanently in the Lorain area.

Mary Ann graduated from Lorain High School in 1934. After high school she remained in her parents' household and worked as a seamstress at the S. Weitz Company in Lorain. On April 30, 1938 she married Zoltan "Sid" Szabó, son of Zsigmond "James" Szabó (1887-1955) and Ilona "Helen" Fintor (1893-1960), Hungarian immigrants from northeast Hungary. She gave birth to two sons in Lorain, Richard (1939) and James (1940).

In 1943 the family moved to Los Angeles, California where they rented a small house in the Glassel Park district near the home of her mother's first cousin from Italy. Mary Ann went to work in the garment district at 9th and Los Angeles Streets as a seamstress. Her husband, Sid, worked at the Bethlehem Shipyard in San Pedro. In April 1944 Sid was inducted into the Army. In December of that year he was shipped to the ETO

Shortly after his return to the U.S. in January 1946 the family moved to Pacoima, California where Sid built his own home. Mary Ann obtained work in Panorama City as a seamstress. Sid worked in construction as a Lather. Mary Ann was active in the PTA and the Moose Lodge in San Fernando where she was devoted to helping needy children.

In 1957 the family moved to the neighboring community of Sylmar in the northeast San Fernando Valley. She remained active in the Moose Lodge and took a job working in the Cafeteria of a local Junior High School. In 1980 her husband, Sid died in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Sepulveda.

In 1998 she moved from Sylmar to the retirement community of Friendly Valley in Newhall, California where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She died at her home in Friendly Valley with her family in attendance on November 2, 2001 a few days before her 85th birthday. At the time of her death she had three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
